GLaDOS' 2009 Final Competition Results

Round 1

In the first round of the competition, we went up against La Pingosta, which had an elaborate waterwheel mechanism to collect both small and big balls. We started in one of our weaker orientations but managed to grab our first big ball and score it. We got in a tangle with the opponent's robot while we were trying to make our second dump of two big balls. After failing to dump, we received a poor estimate of our position and missed the flag box.

GLaDOS 4 - 0 La Pingosta

Round 2

The second round started with us grabbing the first big ball and Brick-bot scoring one small ball. Unfortunately they kept running into us while we tried to back out of the clash and as a result we were unable to score any more points.

GLaDOS 4 - 1 Brick-bot

Round 3

In our third match we were pitted against Salazar in which turned out to be a close match. We were able to score our first ball, but on our second attempt to grab the balls, we lost one blue ball. We successfully scored that ball, along with a small ball. Our robot then attempted to reach the flag box. Salazar was able to reach the flag box before us and, although we did reach it, we were unable to beat the lead Salazar had. However, we still beat their doubled score.

GLaDOS 9 - 6 Salazar

Semifinal

At this point, there were four teams left. It was decided that from this point forward all previous records would be erased. This made us slightly nervous, since we were counting on the buffer we were afforded due to no prior losses. In this new segment of the competition, our first match was against Atrophy Express. Their strategy could not be countered by many groups. Their robot fires a smaller robot into their opponent's goal, making it very difficult to score. It had sails as well, which would have prevented us from scoring over it. Observing them in lab, we realized that we had to intercept their robot and grab the first ball in under three seconds. In addition, once our robot reaches the point of collision, our robot activates its flag motors and spins, attempting to divert them from the goal. We hadn't tested this in a scrimmage against them yet, so we were quite anxious to see whether or not it would work. Once the match began, our robot sprinted to the opposite side of the map, reaching it before their smaller robot had deployed. While it's hard to be certain of exactly what happened, it appeared that as a result of our dash, a small ball got lodged in their deploying mechanism, preventing the smaller robot from emerging and causing their whole robot to halt. We then scored three big balls and one small, unfortunately missing the flag box.

GLaDOS 13 - 0 Atrophy Express

Final

For this match, we were once again forced to fight Salazar. It was a close match on our last encounter, so the results were far from certain at the start of the match. As it began, each of the robots did the first part of its routine uninhibited. On our initial dash, we managed to score 6 points. Salazar scored the two nearest pink balls. Our robot then grabbed its usual big balls, and, in the process, knocked away many of the pink balls it attempted to go to. However, Salazar hit the flag box as it attempted to continue on its path, and it was not able to free itself for the rest of the match. GLaDOS proceeded to score the two largeballs we went for, and then was finally able to successfully raise its own flag, winning the contest.

GLaDOS 28 - 2 Salazar
